On June 3, the Mayor of Água Grande District, José Maria da Fonseca, during a trip to Portugal, took the opportunity to visit LIPOR's operating units and take note of the ongoing initiatives promoted by the International Business Unit and by Lipor Environmental Education and Training Unit.
José Maria da Fonseca, elected president of Água Grande, capital of São Tomé and Príncipe, since November 2018, highlighted the main challenges to be achieved in the short term by the mayor, the improvement of Urban Cleaning and the implementation of an urban waste management plan by promoting the proper disposal and treatment of waste generated in that island region. The commitment on the qualification of the city employees was also evidenced by the Mayor of the District of Água Grande.
Água Grande is the most densely populated region of São Tomé and Príncipe, with some 70,000 inhabitants, and is subject to tourism pressure, which has been intensifying in recent years, so that the issues related to sustainable management of the waste are of special importance, considering the imposing and majestic natural heritage of the country that needs to be preserved.
The President of Água Grande expressed his interest and support in the permanent cooperation between Portugal and the Archipelago of São Tomé and Príncipe, fundamental for the development and sustainability of that country.
