Green Waste 2020 Project promotes free collection of green waste in Lipor’s Associated Municipalities
Within the framework of the Green Waste 2020 Project, LIPOR and its Associated Municipalities are promoting the free collection of green waste in households.
With this project, it is intended to promote the valorisation of all waste categories, namely organic, a fundamental objective to LIPOR.
The implementation of this project allowed the collection and recovery (into compost) of 26,750 tons of bio waste in 2018, a 14% increase over the results for 2017.
In 2019 this project was reinforced with new circuits in the municipalities of Gondomar, Matosinhos and Porto.
In fact, these new circuits are, in addition to the circuits already implemented, allowing citizens residing in the associated municipalities of Lipor, namely Espinho, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Valongo and Vila do Conde, to separate the green waste they produce in their gardens (gardening cuts, such as branches, pruning, grass, leaves or flowers) and allowing its collection through a complementary collection system for green waste which includes Free Pick-up, Door-to-Door or Proximity Systems.
The selective collection of green waste allows it to be directed to organic recovery, allowing its transformation and the production of a high quality natural compost - NUTRIMAIS.
At the same time, this project allows the reduction of the amount of green and organic residues present in the mixed fraction of urban waste contributing to the achievement of the targets set for PAPERSU by 2020, in preparation for the reuse and recycling of biodegradable waste.
