Launch of the CITRES Project on the Maio Island, Cape Verde

On June 27, the official launch of the CITRES Project - Integrated Solid Waste Collection and Treatment Center - took place on Maio Island in Cape Verde.

It was attended by the Delegation of the European Union to Cape Verde, the Camões Institute, I.P., representatives of the Portuguese Embassy in Cape Verde, representatives of Portuguese Cooperation, the Mayor of Maio Island and his team and the Director of DNA - Cape Verde's National Directorate for the Environment.

The main objective, at the end of the project, is for the Municipality of Maio to be able to guarantee effective and sustainable management of the urban waste produced on the island of Maio, by setting up a system for collecting, treating, and recovering waste and raising public awareness of environmental issues.

To this end, integrated and complementary activities will be carried out in 5 major action drivers:

- Infrastructure (construction of the CITRES complex),

- Implementation of Selective Collection,

- Education and Environmental Awareness,

- Training.

- Economic study.

The main implementing partners are the Municipality of Maio, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment of Cape Verde, ANAS - the National Water and Sanitation Agency of Cape Verde and LIPOR - Municipalities Association for Sustainable Waste Management of Greater Porto. LIPOR is the implementing partner, as a specialist in waste management.

The CITRES Maio Project - Integrated Solid Waste Collection and Treatment Center on Maio Island is co-financed by the EU and Portuguese Cooperation through Camões - Institute of Cooperation and Language, I.P., which will also ensure the implementation of the project in the form of delegated cooperation.

It is also hoped that the project can serve as a model and inspire similar actions on other islands in the archipelago.
