LIPOR promotes Specialized Technical Support in Sports Venues in Póvoa de Varzim

Today's society is constantly changing. Population growth translates into an increase in waste production and, for this reason, it is important to act in this sector in order to adopt the best management method, minimizing associated environmental problems.

Sports venues are privileged waste production spaces, particularly for plastic and metal packaging, and, at the same time, spaces that facilitate the recycling process for users.

LIPOR is, today, an entity that reflects the best environmental waste management practices. In this way, and in line with its strategy and that of its associated municipalities, the implementation of a model of separation and collection of recyclable waste in sports venues in Póvoa de Varzim, namely the Academia de Ténis e Indoor Padel; the Clube Desportivo da Póvoa; the Póvoa do Varzim Municipal Stadium; and the Complexo Desportivo da Póvoa do Varzim.

This work had as main objectives;
  • Implement a Selective Waste Collection Service model in sports venues;
  • Increase the quantity of waste sent for multi-material recovery;
  • Encourage the commitment of sports venues to forward their recyclables to LIPOR; and
  • Encourage waste separation among all segments of the population.

Over the last few months, LIPOR's Specialist Technicians have been working, in connection with the respective entities and with the Municipal Council of Póvoa de Varzim, to find and resolve the main difficulties in the implemented management systems. The entire process began with a diagnosis and survey of the characteristics of the various venues, checking the current conditions (deposition equipment and its location, type and frequency of collection, …).

Based on this diagnosis, an appropriate intervention plan was defined, indicating the reformulation of the type of equipment, its specificities and its location, defining, at the same time, the type and periodicity of collection with the Municipality. In this process, 36 undifferentiated bins were relocated and around 110 LIPOR pieces of equipment were installed to encourage recycling.

Raising awareness among regular users of the venues is another fundamental step towards the success of innovative changes, and 5 awareness-raising actions have already been carried out.
In order to follow up the work done, we will continue to monitor changes and improvements and the quality of the loads collected, always with a view to promoting good recycling practices.
