LIPOR and its Associated Municipalities inaugurate an Automatic Packaging Sorting Unit with the largest installed capacity in the Iberian Peninsula

In the presence of the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Polido Pires and the Board of Directors of LIPOR, the Inauguration of the new Automatic Packaging Sorting Unit took place today, September 11th, at LIPOR's facilities.

This Sorting line represents an investment of around 11 million euros and was financed by POSEUR - Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources.

The new unit allows a greater packaging processing capacity, ensuring greater efficiency, an increase in the purity of materials, greater reliability and availability of the facility as well as greater operational flexibility and, consequently, an increase in recycling rates.

The new Unit presents unique characteristics in terms of digitalization and innovation, with the inclusion of tools to obtain mass balances in real time, the possibility of remotely controlling the installation, an 100% automatic baling system and dedicated quality control optical systems with the ability to recognize packaging through artificial intelligence.

The Automatic Packaging Sorting Line inaugurated today will have a minimum nominal capacity of 8 tones/hour, corresponding to an annual treatment capacity of more than 30,000 tones of packaging, thus responding to the challenges that the National Waste Management Plan, PERSU 2030, defines for LIPOR.

According to José Manuel Ribeiro, President of the Board of Directors of LIPOR, "This investment reinforces the commitment of LIPOR and its Municipalities to maximize and increase, in quantity and quality, materials and sending them for Recycling with the goal of maximizing the quantity of waste to be recovered, thus constituting a relevant contribution to the achievement of the European Union goals and objectives for Portugal.”

Keep giving more to Recycling!
