Recycling Increases in the LIPOR System

Citizens from the eight LIPOR municipalities united in Recycling

In the first half of 2024, LIPOR received around 33,927 tons of materials delivered for multi-material recycling of paper/cardboard, plastic, metal and glass, from Door-to-Door Selective Collection, Conditioned Access Systems, Ecopoints and Drop-off Sites, which means a growth of around +3.71% when compared to the first half of 2023.

Coming from Selective Collection of Biowaste and as a result of the expansion of Door-to-Door and Proximity Collection with conditioned access projects to food waste and green waste flows, LIPOR received 26,382 tons, which represents an increase of +6.97% when compared to the first half of 2023.

These results show the strong investment and commitment of LIPOR and its Associated Municipalities in maximizing and increasing, in quantity and quality, the materials to be sent for Recycling and Organic Valorization, with citizen involvement being key. It is worth highlighting the significant growth in the quantity of food waste selectively collected in the residential sector, resulting from the strong commitment of the 8 LIPOR Municipalities to Door-to-Door or Proximity collection with conditioned access.

The heating potential of the waste produced by Citizens was also used, valuing it at the Energy Recovery Plant, which allowed, in the first half of 2024, exporting 83,942 MWh of electricity to EDP's national grid. Just 5,118 tons of waste were deposited in the landfill, which represented only 2% of the waste produced in the eight Associated Municipalities.

The LIPOR and the Associated Municipalities Project provides citizens with a Waste Valorisation System with environmental parameters of international excellence, which has eliminated all landfills in the region, preventing the deposition of waste in landfills to minimum values, thus valuing practically 100% of their waste, improving the quality of life of more than 1 million inhabitants of Greater Porto Area. LIPOR wants to continue investing in prevention, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, decarbonization and investing in increasingly modern waste treatment systems and infrastructures and the consequent elimination of landfills.
