XVII International benchmarking solid waste Portugal passes through LIPOR

On April 10 and 11, 2024, LIPOR - Municipalities Association for Sustainable Waste Management of Greater Porto, hosted a delegation from Brazil as part of the XVII International Benchmarking Solid Waste Portugal Program.

Composed mostly of managers and technicians from Brazilian public authorities, along with some politicians, the delegation went on an intense itinerary that included a series of specialized technical visits. The main objective was to understand the sustainable waste management practices implemented by LIPOR, an international benchmark in this sector.

The group passed through the Recycling Circuit, where participants were able to explore the Center for the Reuse of Electrical and Electronic Equipment, Drop off site, Sorting Plant and the Automatic Packaging Unit. This experience provided a detailed overview of the sorting and recycling operations that contribute to more efficient waste management.

Another crucial point of the visit was the Composting Plant Circuit and the Adventure Park. Participants were taken through Formiga Garden and Adventure Park (a former landfill), where they were able to witness the process of recovering organic and green waste and transforming it into fertilizer, as well as learning about initiatives to rehabilitate degraded areas.

In addition, the Brazilian delegation had the opportunity to explore the LIPOR II Energy Recovery Circuit, which includes the Energy Recovery Plant and the supporting landfill. This was a crucial moment to understand how LIPOR transforms waste into clean energy, thus contributing to the energy sustainability of the Greater Porto region.

The visit to LIPOR not only provided a valuable immersion in waste management best practices, but also strengthened cooperation ties between Portugal and Brazil in this important field. It is hoped that the insights gained during the benchmarking will inspire similar initiatives and promote a more sustainable approach to waste management worldwide.
