LIPOR and Valongo Municipality test the reuse of slag in road construction

The President of the Board of Directors of LIPOR and the Municipality of Valongo, José Manuel Ribeiro, and LIPOR’s Managing Director, Fernando Leite, attended the application of an experimental material AAEG (Artificial Aggregate of Extensive Granulometry) on Rua Álvares Cabral, in Valongo. This material, coming from the slag of the incineration of Urban Waste at the LIPOR Energy Recovery Plant, was used as the base layer of the road pavement, in a section measuring around 60 meters long and 9 meters wide.

The material in question has a grain size like that of tout-venant, the material commonly used to create this pavement base layer. The spreading and compacting of the material supplied by LIPOR was carried out by the contractor for the municipality, for the construction of the subsection 2 of the EN-15 bypass road.

"We have great hope in this innovative solution and we enthusiastically accept this challenge proposed by LIPOR. With this pilot project, we intend to find more sustainable construction solutions in the construction of roads through the reuse of urban waste incineration slag and, at the same time, reduce the need to use natural resources”, highlights José Manuel Ribeiro, President of the Board of Directors of LIPOR – Association of Municipalities for Sustainable Waste Management in Greater Porto.

This practice is also in line with the proposals contained in the Local Action Plan developed by the Municipality of Valongo in the circular network for sustainable construction – R2CS, of the National Initiative for Circular Cities - InC2.
