LIFE Serras do Porto

The Association of Municipalities Parque das Serras do Porto led a winning application for the LIFE Program, managed by CINEA – European Climate Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, bringing together an important group of strategic partners, namely the Municipalities of Gondomar, Paredes and Valongo, LIPOR, Navigator Forest Portugal and also involving a significant number of stakeholders and owners, the LIFE Serras do Porto - Adapting Serras do Porto to Climate Change.(LIFE21 CCA-PT-LIFE SERRAS DO PORTO).

This project, which overall amounts to more than 3.6 million euros, is, in fact, only possible thanks to the joint effort of the beneficiaries involved - the Association, the Municipalities, LIPOR and Navigator - through their human resources and a significant investment in favor of the sustainability of this territory and the quality of life of local communities.

With support from the European Commission of more than 2.1 million euros, a five-year horizon (until August 2027) and the motto of adapting to climate change, LIFE SERRAS DO PORTO has the forest as its core theme and includes an integrated set of interventions with a high positive impact on the landscape and ecosystems, in addition to monitoring, dissemination, awareness and civic engagement actions.

The program is extensive, highlighting:
  • interventions in 423 hectares of forest and riparian areas, including control of exotic and invasive species, planting of 160,792 native trees and shrubs and maintenance of continuity;
  • demonstration actions of adaptation in 12 hectares of agricultural area, installation of an educational apiary and bush management using sapling goats;
  • use of natural-based solutions and bioengineering techniques to increase water retention in the soil and improve riverbanks;
  • constitution of an operational team, for complementary forestry work;
  • promotion of activities aimed at schools, families and the general population;
  • production of various teaching and dissemination materials; and
  • promoting citizen participation through volunteering.
The LIFE Program funding achieved, in addition to being very prestigious for all partners involved, is a unique opportunity to consolidate and scale the work that has been developed in favor of the landscape, the improvement of ecosystems and biodiversity, contributing to increasing resilience of this territory to climate change.
