Adventure Park & Ecological Trail and Casa do Corim gardens, two LIPOR green spaces, awarded the Green Flag Award

For the fourth consecutive year, LIPOR's Adventure Park & Ecological Trail is awarded the Green Flag Award. This recognition is an international reference for quality attributed to public green spaces. The Award recognizes LIPOR's pioneering strategy, which dates to the nineties, of transforming the space of the former landfill into an Adventure Park & Ecological Trail, located in Ermesinde (Valongo) and Baguim do Monte (Gondomar). In this infrastructure, we welcome more than fifty thousand visitors every year to explore and enjoy green spaces while learning about waste and biodiversity.

What's new this year is that Casa do Corim gardens also received recognition. Casa do Corim gardens, another green space under LIPOR management since 2022, have been imbued with the rationale for promoting biodiversity, one of the strategic pillars of the Organization, presented to the public under the auspices of our "Side B”.

LIPOR's biodiversity strategy is based on the following thematic lines:
  1. Consolidate LIPOR's biodiversity strategy
  2. Promote biodiversity & nature positive climate transition
  3. Experience Nature
  4. Share the passion for Nature
Among the initiatives in favor of biodiversity promoted by LIPOR are Square Meter Program, Rio Tinto Valorization Project, support for Leça River Corridor project, participation in the LIFE Serras do Porto project and the biodiverse green spaces, of which they are part Adventure Park & Ecological Trail and Casa do Corim gardens, which have now received this important international recognition.

With more than 25 years, the Green Flag Award uses eight key criteria to evaluate the management structure of each space and carry out an annual condition check, carried out through a network of qualified judges. In this edition, in addition to those awarded in the United Kingdom, 54 parks and green spaces were included in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and Turkey. Portugal had eight winners, all located in the North of the country, including Passeio Alegre Garden, managed by Porto City Council, the only space accredited as a Green Heritage site outside the British Isles.

The list of spaces awarded the Green Flag Award in 2024/25 was announced on August 7, 2024, and is available on the website https://www.greenflagaward.org/#
