At Sustainability Conference, LIPOR Announces Ambition to Achieve Climate Neutrality by 2045

On September 16, 2024, during the Sustainability Conference organized by LIPOR and its Associated Municipalities – in partnership with the Northern Regional Chapter of the Portuguese Engineers' Association – José Manuel Ribeiro, Chairman of LIPOR’s Board of Directors, announced the organization’s progress in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as its goals and ambitions for the coming years.

As part of its 4M Strategy – less waste, less carbon, more climate, more biodiversity – LIPOR, since 2006, has taken on its responsibilities as a producer and manager of greenhouse gases (GHG) and its role as a driver of knowledge, action, and engagement among citizens and society. In this context, LIPOR also integrates climate change into its business strategy.

The 4M Strategy thus represents LIPOR’s commitment to take action to reduce emissions and contribute simultaneously to meet climate policy goals at the European Union, Portugal, and Porto Region levels. The set of measures implemented over the past 18 years has resulted in a reduction of GHG emissions by 157,933 tCO2e, representing a decrease of 38.6% compared to 2006, the reference year.

Building on these results and facing the challenges of the next decade, as well as the strategic objective of diversifying activities and businesses, LIPOR is reinforcing its commitment to reducing emissions by 50% by 2030, cutting its emissions in half compared to 2006. Furthermore, as LIPOR believes in the transition to a competitive, circular, resilient, and carbon-neutral economy, it has also announced its ambition to achieve climate neutrality by 2045.

Of particular note among these measures is the pursuit, since 2016, of achieving zero emissions in Scope 2. This goal was fully accomplished in December 2022 with the signing of an electricity supply contract for the Organic Valorization Plant, which explicitly stipulates the supply of 100% renewable electricity. As a result, in 2023, 7,206 GdO (Guarantees of Origin) were cancelled within LIPOR’s operations, ensuring that electricity consumption was 100% renewable and, consequently, Scope 2 emissions were zero (market-based approach).

The Sustainability Conference, titled "The Importance of Sustainability for Creating Value in Organizations,” was held at the Casa da Música, bringing together 280 participants for a day of reflection on the relevance of ESG topics and their contribution to organizations. The event underscores the concern of LIPOR, its Associated Municipalities, and the Northern Regional Chapter of the Portuguese Engineers' Association in fostering the debate on the importance of Sustainability in Value Creation for Organizations, placing it firmly on the agenda.
